Description

The Salvation Army provides year-long 24/7 low-barrier shelter programming utilizing a 16-bed facility open to street-involved individuals. The Shelter Support Worker ensures a healthy and safe environment for clients/guests. Additionally, the incumbent may provide emotional support and crisis intervention.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

BASIC FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The successful candidate will:

 

• *Monitor the activities of guests and be available for personal, practical, and moral support.

• *Accurately record day-to-day happenings/incidents using established methods.

• *Assisting guests to access clean/dry clothing and laundry services.

• *Coordinate guest care as it relates to security issues.

• *Carry out inspections.

• *Prepare and serve meals/snacks/beverages.

• *Perform janitorial duties of the facility as required.

• *Perform other duties as assigned.

• *Consent to work a flexible schedule.

Please Note: Due to the nature of a low-barrier shelter, applicants should be aware that they will be working with intoxicated individuals.

  QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

 

Certifications:

During the three-month probationary period, it is your responsibility to obtain the following certifications below, which are a requirement for the position:

• Occupational First Aid Level 1

• Food Safe Level 1

 

Experience:

• A heart for people, empathy for those in need, and compassion for individuals struggling with addictions, dealing with mental health barriers, the street entrenched, and the marginalized.

 

HOURS: 40 hours per week. *(Fri-Sun – Shelter Worker) *(Mon-Tue – Cook) *COOK

 

position Purpose summary:

 

The Centre of Hope is a year-long drop-in centre that provides programs, resources, and services to the Mt. Waddington Region. The Cook prepares and delivers nutritious meals as outlined in menus in accordance with applicable food service and safety regulations. BASIC FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

·        Preparing and presenting nutritious meals for the Centre of Hope guests and the Sobering & Assessment Program.

·        Ensuring food services comply with Food Safe regulations, Canada Food Guide, and approved menu plan. Log all data as required for the kitchen.

·        Makes use of and decides on the best use of resources, including donations, to minimize waste.

·        Ensuring preventative maintenance procedures are followed for all food-services equipment.

·        Maintaining the Food Services area and equipment to a high standard of cleanliness.

·        Daily cleaning of the facility as outlined in the task list.

·        Other duties as assigned.

  • Completed grade 12 high school diploma.
  • Food Safe Level 1
  • CPR First Aid ©, or willingness to obtain.
  • WHMIS Training & Universal Precautions Training

Note: an alternative level of education and experience may be considered.

  • Minimum one year experience cooking in an industrial kitchen.
  • Knowledge about food preparation and is familiar with kitchen equipment.

PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:

·        Fluent in spoken and written English

·        Excellent team and interpersonal skills

·        Able to handle physical demands, which include lifting/carrying items up to 30 pounds

·        Has the ability to stand for extended periods of time

·        The performance of the job requires attentive listening (empathy to guests/volunteers/co-workers) and the ability to give directions. It also requires frequent attention to the preparation of food, reading recipes, adhering to safety procedures and regulations and keeping track of what supplies are needed before running out.

  PREFERRED SKILLS/capabilities:

 

·        Food Safe Level 2 will be considered as an asset.

·        Red Seal Certification.

Completion of a formal post-secondary/college program of one academic year.
