The Salvation Army’s Booth University College in Winnipeg has reached a record enrolment with a 37 per cent increase in new campus-based students entering the institution this fall. Booth University College has about 500 students, or about 250 full-time-equivalent students.

The University College’s President, Donald Burke, says the increase in enrolment is largely due to its innovative programs. He credits the institution’s Bachelor of Social Work program for attracting the majority of its new students. Burke says, “The program is becoming well-recognized and well-respected in the community, and graduates have no problem finding employment in this field.”

As well as its Bachelor of Social Work program, in the past year the institution has launched new degree programs in English and Film Studies, Behavioural Sciences, Religion, General Studies and Business Administration. Booth University College has also developed initiatives to extend its reach into the community through its urban service learning program.

David Neale, Vice-President and Academic Dean at Booth University College says, “In addition to campus-based students, our educational institution has also enrolled 350 distance education students.” Neale adds, “These include students in 32 different nations that are studying online in Booth courses.”

While sponsored by The Salvation Army, 90 per cent of Booth’s Winnipeg campus students have no connection with the organization.
