TORONTO, Dec. 7 /CNW/ – Starting today and continuing throughout the evening hundreds of volunteers from Invis and Mortgage Intelligence, two of Canada’s leading mortgage brokerage firms, will visit shelters across the country to distribute new clothing and supplies as part of their Angels in the Night volunteer program.

“In our daily lives we help people find the right home, but with the Angels in the Night project we want to help those who don’t have a place to call home,” says Stan Falkowski, senior vice-president at Invis and Mortgage Intelligence.

This event marks the end of the 2010 year-round fundraising campaign by Invis and Mortgage Intelligence in support of the Salvation Army. Volunteers have reached out to homeless shelters in their communities to find out what supplies are most required and will personally deliver those items today.

The program began in Vancouver in 2002 when Invis mortgage brokers raised $17,000 for the purchase of blankets and coats for local shelters. This year, Angels in the Night volunteers have raised over $173,000, for a total of $1.68 million since 2002. The initiative has expanded coast-to-coast, with deliveries to homeless shelters happening in Halifax, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Vernon, Kelowna, Kamloops and Vancouver.

“Angels in the Night is a great example of how one small idea can expand into something so big. These supplies mean a lot to the people who receive them, and we’re glad that these efforts will help provide even a small measure of dignity for those who need a little extra support during the Christmas season,” says Graham Moore, Territorial Secretary for Public Relations and Development for The Salvation Army.
