It’s the beginning of the school year and many Salvation Army centres are gearing up to provide children and youth quality after-school programs that enhance their physical and emotional well-being.

“Salvation Army after-school programs ensure that all children are afforded opportunities to help them thrive,” says Jennifer Hibbs, outreach worker at The Salvation Army’s Lakeshore Community Church in Etobicoke, Ont.

“The Salvation Army has taken my daughter under their wing,” says Roger. “People don’t do that anymore.”

“My daughter attends after-school clubs at The Salvation Army,” says Roger. “She has bonded with strong, female, mentors who answer her questions and help her with issues. She needs that female support.”

Roger wasn’t expecting to raise his 12-year-old daughter alone. But when his wife was told she had an incurable heart condition and wouldn’t come home from hospital, Roger was left on his own to provide for and care for their daughter.

“The after-school clubs make single-parenting a little easier,” says Roger. “My daughter loves to attend. There are learning opportunities, crafts, games and lots of food. I’m at ease knowing that she is thriving in a safe, fun and nurturing environment.

“Every young person deserves to be cared for and supported.”

“Parents living in poverty can’t afford to enroll their children in after-school care,” says Hibbs. “The Salvation Army is a safe place for children to come, learn and have fun no matter what their economic situation is. Every young person deserves to be cared for and supported.”
