Salvation Army Impacts Young Women Through BRAVE Programming

Each spring, The Salvation Army in Moncton, N.B., hosts “BRAVE,” a special event for girls aged 12-18, focused on fostering empowerment and solidarity among young women.
More than a singular event, “BRAVE” is part of an international movement launched in 2014, which aims to educate and uplift young women who come from vulnerable situations, creating a safe and inclusive space where they can be themselves.
“Our goal is to dedicate the entire day to them, creating the ultimate girls’ day out party, focused on fun and making connections,” emphasized Tracy Sherwood, program coordinator for Moncton Community and Family Services.
The day began with each girl being welcomed warmly by volunteers from The Salvation Army. They were then assigned to a group to begin a journey through various stations created to inspire them and build relationships.
This year featured three primary stations for the girls: a lively games area where friendship blossomed over friendly competition, a tranquil mindfulness room where each girl received a journal for quiet reflection, and a creative friendship bracelet workshop for weaving threads of companionship and support.
When asked about the core message of BRAVE, Tracy explained, “We want these girls to understand they are not alone. Life can be hard, and there is always someone to talk to if they need it. Young people go through so much that we may not fully grasp everything, but it’s important for them to know it’s okay to ask for help.”
For The Salvation Army, BRAVE is about building a community, a supportive network that extends beyond the boundaries of a single day. It is focused on resilience, empowerment, and giving hope to those who need it most.
With newfound confidence and sense of solidarity, the girls can now venture into the world, assured they are seen, they are valued, and they are not alone.
