Feast of Christmas Gives Hope Today

The joyous sounds of holiday music and the smiling eyes of the staff, volunteers and friends of The Salvation Army brought the festive spirit alive for the annual Feast of Christmas at the Centre of Hope in Halifax earlier this December.

The feast, a highlight in the Christmas calendar, was held outside this year and saw more than 300 members of the community stop by for a traditional turkey dinner and dessert to take home and enjoy. Those that did attend were also greeted with delicious hot chocolate and a lively performance by the local Salvation Army brass band ensemble.

“Events like the Feast of Christmas provide our team with the opportunity to connect with community members and let them know they are not alone in their struggles,” says Vaden Vincent, executive director of Halifax Centre of Hope. “That they have an entire army on their side.”

Marie, one of the many community members that stopped by, had a beautiful conversation with Maritime divisional director of public relations and communications, Lieutenant Gina Haggett.

She shared that volunteering and giving to The Salvation Army has been a generational tradition for her family, with both her parents and grandparents having instilled this value in their children. Marie knew that The Salvation Army was the first place to turn when she needed help herself this Christmas season.

“The Salvation Army gives people the tools needed to rebuild dignity and renew hope, especially during the holiday season when spirits can be at their lowest,” shared Vincent.
