Salvation Army Implements Food Bank Delivery Service across the Maritimes
As community needs change due to COVID-19, The Salvation Army Maritime Division has implemented a new food bank delivery service across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.
Those in need who are unable to find safe, reliable transportation to a Salvation Army food bank are now able to call ahead, place an order, and the items will be delivered to their homes.
“We realized that many people are scared to leave their homes. Some don’t have safe transportation, others are vulnerable seniors,” says Captain Jamie Locke, divisional secretary for public relations and development. “When we came to the conclusion that people may be choosing between their safety and the basic necessities of life, we knew we had to revise the way we serve.”
The food bank deliveries began at select locations, but now the service is offered at all Salvation Army locations across the Maritimes.
“When a need is identified it’s our goal to meet it,” explains Captain Locke. “We are constantly adapting our services to meet community needs.”
The Salvation Army food banks are operating following the strict health and safety guidelines of their respective province. Anyone experiencing food insecurity is encouraged to contact their local Salvation Army, and those with reliable transportation can still coordinate pick-up.
“We’re still here to serve. Anyone in need is encouraged to reach out to their local Salvation Army by phone or email. We’re here for you now, and we will still be here long after the pandemic has ended.”
The Salvation Army continues to offer essential services in the midst of COVID-19;
- shelter services
- emergency disaster services
- emotional and spiritual care
- food bank pick-up and delivery
Those who are in need, or those who wish to support our services by donation, are encouraged to contact their local Salvation Army.
