25 years of giving back

Carl Fader has an infectious laugh and a look of sincerity in his eyes that suggest a life well-lived. At 86 years old, Carl has chosen to dedicated his retirement years in service to others by volunteering with The Salvation Army.

Carl's introduction to The Salvation Army was during his childhood on McNabs Island when his aunt, a Salvation Army officer, would come for visits. He recalls seeing her in uniform, but remembers more the work she would do, "visiting people who need help."

Carl says, "I would visit The Salvation Army from Newfoundland to Quebec, stopping in from time to time. Everyone made you feel welcome." It was this welcoming spirit and kinship that stayed with Carl and motivated him to volunteer with The Salvation Army on a regular basis after he retired.

"If I go volunteer at The Salvation Army, I can help people feel welcome too, " says Carl.

For the past 25 years, Carl has dedicated himself to volunteering with The Salvation Army in Dartmouth. He has his hands in everything, from working in the food bank to donning a Santa suit during Christmas and distributing gifts to children in the community.  

Though he is 86 years old, there is no sign of Carl slowing down. He continued to ring the bells for the kettle campaign over Christmas and is always ready to help when needed.

"All they have to do is give me a call, and I'll come help."

The happy life he as lives as a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather serves as motivation to continue to give back and share joy with those facing challenges. "When I look back on it, I had an excellent life. I feel that I need to give back to the community and help out."
