Volunteers celebrated in Miramichi, NB

The Salvation Army Community Resource Centre in Miramichi, NB, celebrated its annual volunteer appreciation night last month, drawing a crowd of approximately 140 volunteers as the guests of honour.

The evening was a recognition of the efforts put in by the scores of volunteers in the northeastern New Brunswick city. Held at St. Mary’s Catholic Parish Centre in Miramichi, staff and volunteers served the crowd a hot turkey dinner, prepared by Alice Henderson and her team.

Volunteers in attendance each received a small token of appreciation as well as a unique stuffed animal, complete with a note of encouragement from Capt. Darlene Sutton.

Captains Wilson and Darlene Sutton took to the podium to convey their appreciation and gratitude to all those that gave of their time during the past year for The Salvation Army.

Some fast facts on Salvation Army volunteerism in Miramichi last year:

— 136 people volunteered during the Christmas kettle campaign, of which 30 were first-time volunteers
— 20 people volunteered at the Thrift Store and Community Family Services
— Six volunteers assisted with Christmas support hampers
— 14 churches or groups prepared friendship suppers at The Salvation Army hall from October through May
— Volunteer hours in Miramichi eclipsed 6,000 last year
— The oldest volunteer was 90, while the youngest was just nine
