The Salvation Army in Newfoundland comes to the aid of a stranded Russian Ship.

Stranded Russian Ship in St. John's HarborThe Lyubov Orlova has been tied on in St. John’s harbour since Sept. 25.  Ship provisions started to run out and the more than 50 crew members, having no money and no way home and little foods, were subsisting on breakfasts of tea and bread.

Russian Government officials contacted The Salvation Army for assistance and The Salvation Army sprang into action. “We were able to deliver a van load of fruits and vegetables, meats, cheese, eggs, and toiletries”, said Major Ken Percy. The Salvation Army also provided a Doctor to examine a number of sick crew members and as a result, The Salvation Army was able to provide much needed medication.

The Lyubov Orlova still remains docked in St. John’s Harbour and The Salvation Army continues to meet need by providing hot meals and out fitting the complete crew for winter with warm clothing from The Salvation Army Thrift Stores in the city.

Major Donette Percy, Community & Family Services Director says, “Depending on how long the ship is actually in the harbour, and how long the crew are here, then we’ll just determine what they need, and the Salvation Army will be there to meet their need.”

An unnamed crew member says that he’s very grateful. “Thank you very much, very good support and very good cooperation, very good understanding between Russian and Canadian people.”

Majors Ken & Donette Percy meet with a very relieved and thankful Ship's Captain.
