Wayne and Ina-Lou Brownlee of Saskatoon are lifelong Saskatchewanians, originally from Biggar, SK. They were high school sweethearts and have been married for almost 50 years. The Brownlees have a full life with children, grandchildren, hobbies, interests, and community involvement. When it came time to discuss how they wanted to leave a legacy, the Brownlees considered what areas they were passionate about and decided they wanted their love of Saskatoon to continue shining on the city’s most vulnerable.

The Brownlees decided to designate a substantial monetary gift to The Salvation Army in Saskatoon. To ensure their contribution has a lasting impact, they decided to provide the gift in the form of a Donor Advised Spendable Fund. This a donation that is disbursed over several years to help with planning and budgeting and ensures years of financial support for the work of The Salvation Army.

“It actually feels really good to give back to your community and to the causes. And, as we’ve done more and more, it’s been so gratifying,” says Wayne Brownlee.

When a generous gift such as the Brownlee’s donation is made to The Salvation Army, we do our best to inform the donors about the services offered, show the services in action, and explain where the need is so that they can decide how they want their gift to be used. The Brownlees recently toured The Salvation Army Crossroads Residential Shelter. They were able to ask questions, get to know and understand the operation and see how their donation will change lives.

Wayne and Ina-Lou felt strongly that they wanted to ensure their donation would help in Saskatchewan. Wayne recalls that his father had given to The Salvation Army when he was a child, prompting him to consider giving to the organization. While the Brownlees aren’t in it for the recognition, they believe that by sharing their plans to continue helping Saskatoon’s less fortunate, they might inspire others to do the same and continue building a stronger community for years to come.
