T.A.S.K. (Together After School for Kids), is a healthy food program, offered to children 7 through 12 years of age, to have fun learning the importance of health.  T.A.S.K. empowers kids to make healthier choices through hands-on preparation of healthy food and how to work effectively in and through groups.

Thanks to the generosity of PC® Children’s Charity, thirty-seven children registered for the T.A.S.K. program that ran from September 2018 to April 2019 at the Barbara Mitchell Family Resource Centre in Winnipeg.

Providing children a safe after-school environment and an opportunity to develop healthy eating habits and essential life skills, T.A.S.K. offers:

    –  A no-cost program that provides children the opportunity to participate in the preparation of healthy food.

    –  Essential team-building principles within a multi-cultural setting.

    –  Group discussions focused on important health issues.

A new recipe was taught and made each week by the children.  Cooking and preparation skills built their knowledge of healthy food.  Personal confidence increased over the weeks as the children learned how to read a recipe, follow direction, and work as a team while developing habits of food safe handling procedures like regular hand-washing, food storage, discarding contaminated food and the importance of cleaning and sanitizing.

The ultimate challenge, at the end of the season, came when the all children are sent home with a package each that contained all the necessary ingredients to prepare a tuna noodle casserole for their family.  The family was asked to complete a simple evaluation form and take a picture of their child’s creation and email it back to us.

A keepsake recipe book was compiled of all the dishes the children made throughout the duration of the program that they could take home.

Thank you, PC® Children’s Charity.  Your contribution to these children will make a lasting impact on their lives.
