Barbara Mitchell Family Resource Centre enjoying new furniture thanks to government grant
Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program
May 17, 2018 – Dan Vandal, Member of Parliament for Saint Boniface Saint Vital, recently visited the Barbara Mitchell Family Resource Centre (BMFRC) to view the new furniture that was funded by the Government of Canada’s News Horizons for Seniors Program, and also took some time to chat with seniors during his visit.
“The Government of Canada is dedicated to expanding opportunities for Canadian seniors to get involved in community activities that meet their needs, reflect their interests, and tap their collective resources and experiences,” says Dan Vandal, MP for Saint Boniface – St. Vital. “I am thrilled to announce a New Horizons for Seniors Program grant to the Barbara Mitchell Family Resource Centre to help them purchase specialized furniture so that seniors can better participate in the many great activities and programs offered by the centre.”

Major Darlene Burt, executive director at BMFRC, indicates that, “Over forty-five percent of our highly multi-cultural neighborhood is made up of people over the age of 55. Programming is offered four mornings each week for seniors, offering learning components, low impact exercises, ‘Pickleball,’ and social interaction.”

“We believe that if you give newcomer families from marginalized communities an opportunity to access a culturally safe place where they can come together and access immediate supports to build a network, practice English skills and embrace cultural values in Canada without having to abandon their own, they will be more likely to integrate wholly, experience reduced risk of social isolation and participate in a vibrant, sustainable community.“
