Hope in the City Breakfast launches The Salvation Army’s Kettle Campaign

    Bacon, eggs, hash browns, and a side of hope is what was on the menu at The Salvation Army's 12th annual Hope in the City Breakfast.

    The breakfast saw an attendance of nearly 400 people as attendees packed the RBC Convention Centre on November 9 to hear from a variety of speakers, including Deputy Mayor Jenny Gerbasi; Nafiya Naso, spokesperson for the Yazidi refugees; Dianna Bussey, Correctional & Justice Services Director/Social Services Consultant, Human Tracking; The Honourable Cathy Cox, Minister of Sustainable Development; Major Rob Kerr, Divisional Secretary for Public Relations, The Salvation Army Prairie Division; and Major Shawn Critch, Divisional Commander, The Salvation Army Prairie Division.

    While the event served to showcase the work of The Salvation Army and its many partners throughout 2016 — highlighted in such videos as 'English Café' ; 'Kate's Place' ; 'Open House' ; and 'Annual Review' — it also shifted the focus onto the organization's two flagship campaigns that will close out the year; Toy Mountain and the local Kettle Campaign.

    With Toy Mountain in full swing, residents are invited to donate new and unwrapped toys to any Scotiabank location across Winnipeg, as well as any fire station or police station. Additionally, any families wishing to register for the program can call our Weetamah Corps at 204-946-9490 for more information. Toy Mountain will reach its peak over the December 2-3 weekend at CF Polo Park Mall as The Salvation Army and its partners make one massive drive for donations and build an actual mountain of toys inside the mall!

    The Kettle Campaign has been an icon of the holidays for more than a century in Canada, as Winnipeg residents can once again expect to hear the familiar sound of ringing bells from our devoted volunteers, standing next to their kettle and collecting cash donations. This year, The Salvation Army hopes raise $351,000 through the Kettle Campaign; funds that will help keep the organization's many local programs running all year long.
