Winnipeg, MB – Each year The Salvation Army gives hope and dignity to communities in Winnipeg through many programs, services and ministry units. It witnesses first-hand the burdens economic recession, emergencies and disasters place upon so many. Salvation Army personnel work on the frontlines every day feeding and housing the homeless, assisting new Canadians as they settle in, providing programs for youth and families in the downtown core, and provide a place for Spiritual growth and support through its ministry units.

The Salvation Army hosted its 8th Annual Hope in the City Breakfast with special guest, two-time Olympic Gold Medalist and five-time World Champion, Catriona Le May Doan this morning at the Winnipeg Convention Centre.  The theme for this year’s breakfast was ‘No One Should Walk Alone’. During the breakfast guests were treated with stories of hope and courage provided by clients and program staff of The Salvation Army.  A recap of how The Salvation Army has been giving hope and restoring dignity to the great city of Winnipeg was also provided. The well attended event was hosted by CBC News Anchor, Janet Stewart.

During the Breakfast The Salvation Army also kicked off two important campaigns for the Christmas season – the annual Christmas Kettle Campaign and the 2012 Toy Mountain Campaign presented by 102.3 CLEAR FM and 92 CITI FM in partnership with Scotiabank.

The annual Christmas Kettle Campaign is The Salvation Army’s major fundraising initiative that takes place November and December of each year.  The monies raised during this time go toward funding the many necessary programs of The Salvation Army that offer hope and dignity to so many in our community who find themselves facing great need and misfortune.  The goal for this year is $385,000.  With the kindness that Winnipeggers have shown to The Salvation Army year after year, we believe not only can we meet this goal, but we can exceed it.

102.3 CLEAR FM and 92 CITI FM in partnership with Scotiabank will also kick off the 2012 Toy Mountain campaign in support of The Salvation Army. This toy drive helps The Salvation Army ensure every child has something special under the tree during Christmas.  This year’s goal is to collect 15,000 toys for 15,000 children.  Cash donations or a new unwrapped toy can be dropped off at any Scotiabank or Salvation Army location.  Toys are also being collected at each Winnipeg Fire Station location.  McDonald’s locations in the city are also collecting spare change in specially marked Toy Mountain coin boxes.
