Winnipeg, MB – The River East Collegiate Key (Kiwanis Educating Youth) Club is a team of hard working, energetic and dedicated young adults.  On Thursday, June 14th they dropped by The Salvation Army Weetamah Centre with a generous donation of food and clothing.

Brigitta Schuler, spokesperson for Key Club, explains, “We were looking to help something within Winnipeg, something within our own city.  We felt that The Salvation Army was the best place to go because they have services that help people who are outside and can’t come in, who need a meal”

Through their efforts, the River East Collegiate Key Club raised money to buy much needed food for the programs, such as the after school homework club and Urban Cafe of The Salvation Army Weetamah centre. They also collected a large donation of beautiful, gently used clothing that will be distributed through the weekly Hallway Ministry at Weetamah.

“We decided to raise money to buy food and supplies for The Salvation Army,” explains Schuler, “We have done two different bake sales which brought in quite a bit for us.  With the money we raised, we partnered with Sobey’s where we bought all our supplies.  They gave us 10% back on all that we bought.”

As a result of their hard work, the Key Club generously donated two trolleys of much needed food, a large quantity of gently used clothing and $200 to support the programs and services at Weetamah.

“These donations came at just the right time.  The supplies for our after school program and the Urban Café were quite low.  Thankfully, we now have the necessary grocery supplies to provide much needed food to our programs,” states Jeffrey Hamel, Community Ministries Supervisor at The Salvation Army Weetamah Centre, “We are continually amazed and blessed by the support of socially conscientious groups like the River East Collegiate Key Club.  Without support of caring people like them, it would be near impossible to continue to offer the valuable services that give hope and restore dignity to our inner city community.  Thank you!”

The Salvation Army extends a heartfelt thank you to the students of River East Collegiate Key Club.  Their generous support will give hope and dignity to those who greatly need it.  If you would like to join the River East Collegiate Key Club in Giving Hope Today, please give online at www.salvationarmy.ca/donate or call (204) 975-1033 to make your donation today.
