New Fork Lift Training Program

The Salvation Army in Regina is partnering with Carmichael Outreach and the Regina and District Food Bank to deliver a community-based program that connects job seekers with local employment opportunities.   

The Fork Lift Training Partnership will provide unemployed individuals with fork lift, skid steer and pallet jack certification.   The first group of 12 participants is receiving training from March 7 – 18, 2011.  A second group will receive training later in the year.  

The course is designed by the Salvation Army and the training is run by Ron Damon, Fork Lift and WHMIS Instructor, with the goal of maximizing the opportunities for participants to obtain steady employment.  After completing the course, participants will have the skills necessary to do a broad range of jobs, including warehouse work, snow removal and landscaping. 

“Following the success of the two-day pilot project in September a decision was made to continue this program,” Val Wiks, Community Ministries Worker of The Salvation Army’s Haven of Hope Community Ministries said.  “With the Global Transportation Hub opening in Regina and an increasing need for skilled warehouse employees, this is an excellent time to provide the training.  It is also an important step to empowering people and giving them a sense of dignity.” 

The partnership is fully funded by the Government of Saskatchewan.  

“We need skilled workers in our province, and in order to help people succeed and make a better life for their family, they’re going to need training,” Minister of Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration Rob Norris said.   “I’d like to thank everyone involved in making this new program a reality.  And I’d like to say good luck to the 24 people taking this course.” 

 The skid steer loader used this week has been loaned to the program by TransGas, a subsidiary of SaskEnergy.
