For the fifth year, London Citadel ran its youth summer outreach program the Blastin’ Brass Day Camp. Program Directors Jon Rowsell and MK Virtue, Assistant Program Director Josh Champ, as well as Counselors Stephanie Rigg, Mykaela Rigg, and Andrew Virtue made up the Blastin’ Brass staff.

The camp took place at London Citadel and ran for three sessions of two weeks each. The campers were provided with their own instrument rental, camp T-shirt, lunches and snacks. They took part in various activities such as Bible lessons, theory lessons, band rehearsals, sports, outings, electives, and choir.

Staff also planned special activities for the campers such as water day, team building activities and a movie afternoon on the last day. The activities are interactive and the children are very involved. Some of their favourite activities include the counselor watermelon eating contest, camper vs. counselor dodgeball, and of course getting a chance to pie a counselor in the face.

At the end of each two week session the campers put on a final program for their parents, friends and relatives to enjoy. In each final program there were performances by chamber ensembles, the beginner band, and the advanced band.

The highlight of the program was when everyone came together to perform a musical. This year Blastin’ Brass put on the performance of The First Action Heroes by Pam Andrews. Through this musical, the campers learned lessons about trust, courage, forgiveness and obedience.

Above all, they came to understand the love of Jesus. As we discovered in the musical we all need the power of God, GOD’S POWER UP!
