It is National Volunteer Week and The Salvation Army wants to celebrate all of our wonderful selfless volunteers who donate their time; a gift that is priceless. Whether an individual is sorting clothing at our thrift stores or at the food bank giving a hungry family a much-needed food hamper, these kind gestures help improve the lives of others. In many ways, volunteering is an act of love and compassion that breaks down barriers and strengthens communities. In honour of this week, The Salvation Army would like to take this opportunity to recognize just some of our many dedicated volunteers:

Greg Gives Hope at the Barrie Bayside Thrift Store

Greg - Volunteer While unemployed, Greg’s late aunt suggested that he volunteer at The Salvation Army Thrift Store with her to help out. Unfortunately, Greg’s aunt passed away from cancer, but he decided to keep volunteering as he enjoyed the company of the staff.

“Volunteering makes me feel great,” Greg says, “My favourite memory was when a mother and her children relocated to Barrie after leaving a relationship. They came to The Salvation Army with nothing and we were able to give them clothes and items for their new apartment.”

Annita’s Legacy of Love

Annita Gray Annita’s father was a soldier in World War II and remembers The Salvation Army sending him off to war and welcoming him home. Because of that fond memory, he always had a spot in his heart for the Army and instilled that love in his families’ hearts as well.

Now retired, Annita volunteers as a cook with The Salvation Army and is happy that she can use her cooking skills to provide healthy meals to those in need in Belleville, Ontario.

“The Salvation Army provides more than just food to people in need…they provide HOPE!”

David’s Positive Impact

David - VolunteerDavid volunteers at the Cawthra Road Shelter in Mississauga, Ontario. Volunteering has not only positively impacted those he serves, but it has made a difference in David’s life as well. “I know my efforts are not only helping others, but it has also helped me grow as a person,” he explained, “Ever since I started volunteering, I have become more compassionate and empathetic.”

David is now a regular volunteer and says that volunteering has become an integral part of his life.

Gloria Gives the Gift of Hope

Sarah - VolunteerFor Gloria, volunteering at the Yorkwoods Community Church is a fun way to give back to the community. Her favourite part of volunteering is seeing the joy on people’s faces and being able to provide life-changing services to those in need in the community.

“Volunteering is an act of humanity and I want to give the gift of hope to those who come to The Salvation Army.”

The Salvation Army is truly grateful to our dedicated volunteers that help uplift humanity, inspire hope and transform the lives of those in need.
