For Newmarket resident Kelly, eating healthily on a budget was a challenge, but she’s found an affordable solution thanks to an innovative partnership between The Salvation Army and the York Region Food Network (YRFN).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Affordable Fresh Food Market, held on the last Wednesday of each month at The Salvation Army Northridge Community Church in Aurora, offers high-quality produce at significantly reduced prices. But it\u2019s more than just a place to buy groceries; it\u2019s a space built on dignity, community, and compassion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cI first saw the market on social media and thought it was a great idea,\u201d says Kelly. \u201cI wanted to support it and pick up some healthy food at a reasonable cost.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Kelly has purchased favourites like grapes, tomatoes, celery, and green onions. The savings have been a welcome relief and has helped reduce her grocery bill by allowing her to get better quality food for less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re proud of how this market brings people together,\u201d says Angela Covert, community and family services manager at Northridge Community Church. \u201cWith the support of the York Region Food Network, we\u2019re helping ensure that fresh, affordable food is available to everyone who needs it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Launched in 2023, the initiative helps individuals and families facing food insecurity access healthy options they might otherwise go without.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe were seeing people in very precarious situations\u2014not having enough money for rent, transportation, medicine, and food,\u201d says Kate Greavette, executive director of YRFN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

To meet these needs, YRFN sources produce at reduced prices or through donations, allowing items to be sold for as little as 25 cents.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

During the times of the market, the church is transformed into a community hub, and a cozy caf\u00e9 offers coffee and snacks for shoppers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Individuals  can connect with partner organizations on-site that offer support with housing, mental health, and legal needs. While many people are clients of The Salvation Army, the market is open to anyone in the community looking to reduce their grocery bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s important that people don\u2019t feel like they\u2019re receiving charity,\u201d Kate says. \u201cThe market was built around partnership and respect.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That welcoming spirit is what keeps Kelly coming back\u2014not just for the groceries, but for the connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt gets you out of the house, it\u2019s social, and it helps you connect with others,\u201d she says. \u201cIt also helps me to provide service to others by alerting them to the market.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
