{"id":3014,"date":"2025-03-27T13:10:25","date_gmt":"2025-03-27T13:10:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/salvationarmy.ca\/ontario\/?p=3014"},"modified":"2025-05-26T11:27:14","modified_gmt":"2025-05-26T11:27:14","slug":"staying-connected-and-providing-hope-for-older-adults","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/salvationarmy.ca\/ontario\/2025\/03\/staying-connected-and-providing-hope-for-older-adults\/","title":{"rendered":"Staying Connected and Providing Hope for Older Adults"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A burning pot of soup on the stove was the first sign that something was happening to Barbara, a participant in Adult Day Services at The Salvation Army Winterberry Heights Church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her daughter, Kristina Boch, came home from work, noticed the gas stove was still on, and asked her mother when she had made the soup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe said, \u2018around noon when Wheel of Fortune is on,\u2019\u201d Kristina recalls. \u201cThat\u2019s when I knew\u2014we needed help and we had to figure things out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Salvation Army Adult Day Services, which opened in 2006, provides meaningful activities for older adults living with dementia, helping them maintain independence while reinforcing their sense of purpose, well-being, and self-worth. The program also offers much-needed respite for caregivers, giving them time to rest and reduce stress while providing access to additional community resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Kristina, knowing her mother is in a safe, welcoming space brings peace of mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Barbara joined Adult Day Services a year ago and now attends three days a week and participates in therapeutic recreational activities designed to support her social, cognitive, physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe play games like bingo and concentration, we joke and laugh, and we do exercises\u2014which are important, too. Then we have a nice hot lunch,\u201d Barbara says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond activities, she finds purpose in connecting with others, and she provides encouragement to fellow participants when they struggle to recall details from their past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re all in the same boat, so I tell them not to worry. I crack jokes to lift their spirits, and now everyone wants to sit with me because they feel safe,\u201d Barbara says. \u201cHelping them gives me a sense of purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kristina has noticed a positive change in Barbara\u2019s mood since she joined the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe used to get quite depressed, but now I see more excitement and joy,\u201d Kristina says. \u201cShe has something to look forward to, which she didn\u2019t have before.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adult Day Services executive director, Devon Delaney, says the program is designed to be community-inclusive and not only for those living with dementia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPeople can attend simply because they&#8217;re socially isolated, so we want to remove that stigma. Individuals are not coming because they\u2019re sick; they\u2019re coming to stay well,\u201d Devon explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your donations to The Salvation Army provide hope where there is hardship through programs like Adult Day Services.
