{"id":3006,"date":"2025-03-18T13:06:16","date_gmt":"2025-03-18T13:06:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/salvationarmy.ca\/ontario\/?p=3006"},"modified":"2025-05-26T11:27:14","modified_gmt":"2025-05-26T11:27:14","slug":"a-world-of-flavours-at-the-salvation-army","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/salvationarmy.ca\/ontario\/2025\/03\/a-world-of-flavours-at-the-salvation-army\/","title":{"rendered":"A World of Flavours at The Salvation Army"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every Wednesday, 16-year-old Jerzy Coburn joins a small group of young chefs at The Salvation Army Suncoast Citadel in Goderich to sharpen their culinary and leadership skills in the Kids\u2019 Cooking Club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jerzy first learned about the club from a friend and decided to check it out, and now, after a couple of years, she feels much more confident in the kitchen. Open to youth aged 12 to 17, the program provides hands-on experience in meal preparation while teaching essential food-handling knowledge and kitchen safety skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI used to be nervous about cooking meat because I didn\u2019t want to undercook it,\u201d she shares. \u201cBut after being in the club, I\u2019ve learned how to tell when it\u2019s done properly.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each session, led by program coordinator Lisa Walker, features a new theme. Currently, participants are exploring foods of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEvery week, we focus on a different country. Students prepare and cook a meal, and at 5:30 p.m., parents are welcome to join their children for dinner,\u201d Lisa explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By mealtime, anywhere between 12 and 18 people gather to enjoy the dishes. Recent menu items include tourti\u00e8re with mashed potatoes, green bean almondine and cauliflower au gratin, as well as homemade perogies served with kielbasa and sauerkraut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond improving her cooking skills, Jerzy has gained patience and leadership experience. She even volunteers at a Suncoast Citadel cooking program for younger children, passing along what she\u2019s learned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNaturally, they didn\u2019t know how to do most things, so teaching them took a lot of patience,\u201d she recalls. \u201cBut it was fun seeing them learn.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of Jerzy\u2019s most memorable experiences in the club was making homemade Pop-Tarts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019d never made anything like that before. Some turned out perfect, and others, not so much,\u201d she says. \u201cBut it was fun just trying something new.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While she isn\u2019t planning to become a professional chef, the skills she\u2019s gained will stay with her as she moves toward independence and prepares for post-secondary schooling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With each session, the Kids\u2019 Cooking Club is serving up more than just meals\u2014it\u2019s nurturing learning, growth, and connection.
