Behind the Wall, owned by Andrew Russell, works closely with The Salvation Army\u2019s housing and outreach teams to address homelessness across the city by creating stable, subsidized housing opportunities. This collaboration has created a brighter future for over 150 previously unhoused individuals, helping them transition into safe, reliable housing while offering a fresh start to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cWithout housing, you can\u2019t get started. You can\u2019t get a job or get your bearings if you have no place to feel safe, take a shower, or just be yourself,\u201d Andrew explains, emphasizing that a stable home provides a solid base from which people can begin to thrive.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
Grant Yusak knows first-hand the significance of this innovative partnership and Andrew\u2019s compassion. Without the support, Grant says he likely would still be sleeping wherever he could find shelter. With a stable place to call home, he now faces life with renewed optimism and confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI always had the belief that somebody was taking care of me. And I know life was going to change for the positive at some point, which it has,\u201d he says. \u201cMy gratitude is over the top. I\u2019m looking forward to taking another step forward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tailored Support for Lasting Change<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
Behind the Wall and The Salvation Army\u2019s housing and outreach teams work together to provide each tenant with the resources they need to remain stable, grow, and make lasting changes in their lives. This support includes counselling, community integration, help with finding employment and arranging access to necessary medical services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOur goal is to provide personalized support to help those we serve to achieve their goals\u2014whether it\u2019s finding a family doctor or accessing mental health services,\u201d says Mikyla Tacilauskas, manager of outreach and housing services at The Salvation Army Ottawa Booth Centre, which supported the signing of 213 leases in 2024. \u201cWhen individuals move in, we also support landlords by checking in to ensure everything is going well for both the tenant and the landlord. It\u2019s about creating a stable, supportive environment for everyone involved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nThanks to the strong partnership with The Salvation Army, Behind the Wall has expanded its capacity to house tenants with complex needs.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
A Partnership Built on Trust and Providing Hope for the Future<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
Behind the Wall currently manages a 26-unit building fully occupied by individuals The Salvation Army serves and oversees 10 additional properties in Ottawa housing formerly homeless individuals. Andrew\u2019s dedication to this work goes beyond financial motivations; he values the profound impact of stable housing on tenants\u2019 lives and believes in the long-term benefits of creating sustainable housing options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Working with vulnerable tenants can have its challenges. Still, The Salvation Army’s team’s case management support and patience have made it easier for landlords like Andrew to navigate any issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cPartnering with The Salvation Army has given me the rocket fuel to expand, create more units, and provide even more housing opportunities,\u201d Andrew says. \u201cThey\u2019re very patient and supportive. If a tenant is struggling, we work together to adjust and keep going.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
With plans to expand and build a 110-unit building specifically for vulnerable individuals needing stable affordable housing, Andrew is committed to continuing this vital work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThere\u2019s nothing like it in life. Just knowing they had an opportunity, and they made the most of it is the most incredible thing,\u201d he says. \u201cMy goal by the end of next year is to house every person on The Salvation Army\u2019s list.
