The Salvation Army changed my life for the better. They changed me,\u201d said Nikara.<\/p>\n<p>Nikara is one of many women at The Salvation Army Honeychurch Family Life Resource Centre in Brampton, an emergency shelter which supports women and children fleeing domestic violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a group of women who didn\u2019t want anything from me. They just wanted me to do better. I am grateful for that, and I am going to be forever grateful,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Honeychurch Family Life Resource Centre offers counselling services, legal services, counselling for children and child and youth support, as well as housing and outreach services.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa, who also sought help from Honeychurch, explains she was once struggling with addiction and involved in prostitution, but she got a lot of support and help from The Salvation Army that changed her life. \u201cThey showed me that they loved me when I didn\u2019t love myself,\u201d said Melissa. \u201cThey showed me how to care for myself better and care for my children with many resources, as well as child counselling and counselling for myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour situation doesn\u2019t define who you are. \u00a0It doesn\u2019t make you a bad person,\u201d said Melissa.\u00a0 \u201cThe Salvation Army saved my life, and they can\u2019t get rid of me. \u00a0They are stuck with me,\u201d she laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I have a conversation with mom the first thing I say to them Is \u2018I could be you and you could be me very easily.\u2019\u00a0 Whatever decisions they make I\u2019m not here to judge them I am here to support them,\u201d said Linda Fleming, Children\u2019s Counsellor at Honeychurch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe women I speak to often don\u2019t remember what was said to them, but they remember how they felt. How we treat people and how we give a piece of ourselves to that person I think that\u2019s what matters most.
