The Salvation Army has acquired a new Emergency Disaster Services Vehicle (CRV) which is now being used as a food truck to serve the homeless in the region.<\/p>\n

As of April 23rd, The Salvation Army staff are serving hot meals and beverages that are prepared in the kitchen and then kept warm in the new CRV vehicle, where it can be served to those in need on the streets.<\/p>\n

The truck will also be used to support those affected by any future disasters in the province such as flooding or tornadoes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe vehicle has been purchased thanks to a very generous anonymous donor. It\u2019s a wonderful addition to the support we can offer the community,\u201d said Salvation Army Lieutenant Brad Webster. \u201cA Salvation Army van will also follow the truck to offer hygiene kits and other needed items depending on the weather.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

As the pandemic continues through 2021, some people were not only feeling the impacts of isolation but are also in need of support for basic necessities. The province of Ontario continues to be in lock down, but The Salvation Army is there for those in need everyday.<\/p>\n

Lt. Webster says the food bank remains very busy. \u201cWe have seen an increase in need again as government relief funds run out. We are now serving about 800 people a month with bags of groceries and hygiene products which is about double what we were serving last summer,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The food bank is currently by appointment only and individuals are being served through the door in order to keep everyone safe. Lt. Webster said he is glad that people seem to know where to turn to in the community during difficult times.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been a major support system for Sarnia\u2019s vulnerable population for many years and will continue to provide hope and essential services,\u201d said Lt. Webster.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Sarnia Salvation Army Thrift Store has reopened to customers. Community and Family Services staff are again offering vouchers for the thrift store so families can choose the items they need, including clothing and household items.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur biggest challenge has been finding a way to stay connected with our congregation. Our church programs including senior\u2019 ministry and kid\u2019s club have had to be cancelled during the pandemic. We are hearing from people that they are feeling the impacts of that,\u201d said Lt. Webster. \u201cWe have had to switch to telephone and email ministry supports to keep in touch with everyone. We also offer a weekly newsletter with scripture.\u201d<\/p>\n
