The<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Salvation Army<\/span>\u00a0in Richmond Hill, Ontario<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>handed out over 70 Family Food\u00a0<\/span>B<\/span>oxes to families in<\/span>\u00a0need in<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>their local area<\/span>, an\u00a0<\/span>initiat<\/span>iv<\/span>e inspired by the many\u00a0<\/span>food box meal prep<\/span>aration<\/span>\u00a0services that are now available on a subscription basis.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy wife and I are subscribed to a food box service,\u00a0<\/span>and it\u2019s so convenient to receive<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>all of the ingredients in one handy box\u00a0<\/span>with the spices and recipe<\/span>s<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d shared Captain Jon Savage of The Salvation Army Richmond Hill Community Church.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>It makes for a no-fuss family dinner night. We were inspired by this idea and thought that\u00a0<\/span>it\u00a0<\/span>would be something we could create on our own for f<\/span>amilies in need in our community<\/span>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At Christmas time, the Richmond\u00a0<\/span>H<\/span>ill location\u00a0<\/span>packed\u00a0<\/span>65 boxes in a\u00a0<\/span>similar<\/span>\u00a0effort, so the idea to continue th<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>in a unique way w<\/span>as worth a try.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The result was a ready-to-assemble meal in a<\/span>\u00a0box, complete with a recipe a<\/span>nd<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>dessert<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The first box this month i<\/span>ncludes everything needed\u00a0<\/span>for a homemade lasagna and comes with<\/span>\u00a0the tinfoil pan, fresh cheese, sauce, spices, and lasagna pasta, along with a voucher<\/span>, courtesy of a Rogers donation\u00a0<\/span>to purchase the fresh me<\/span>a<\/span>t at the grocery store.<\/span>\u00a0The box also include<\/span>s both<\/span>\u00a0a salad mix and a cake mix with icing<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>a delicious way to t<\/span>op off the meal.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0All ingredients were purchased the same day the box was delivered.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Captain Savage shared that\u00a0<\/span>the idea has brought<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a smile\u00a0<\/span>to many faces and the comfort of a home-cooked meal <\/span>to those who need a little extra\u00a0<\/span>h<\/span>ope this\u00a0<\/span>month<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0\u201c<\/span>It\u2019s great because\u00a0<\/span>all<\/span>\u00a0the recipients now have a recipe to keep so they can make it in the future.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Our location in Richmond Hill doesn\u2019t have a\u00a0<\/span>food bank, but this extra touch allows us to offer something different.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The next step for The Salvation Army Richmond Hill Community Church is to put out a call to the<\/span>ir\u00a0<\/span>congregation for recipe ideas.\u00a0<\/span>They\u2019re looking for a variety of\u00a0<\/span>flavo<\/span>u<\/span>rs<\/span>\u00a0with some vegetarian options as well.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
