Sponsor a Family this Christmas!

For too many Canadians, especially during these challenging economic times, the basic necessities of life needed for human dignity are out of reach.  The Salvation Army provides direct, compassionate hands-on service to more than 1.9 million Canadians each year, to help restore dignity and hope to those who need it most.

Through our Christmas Assistance program, The Salvation Army provides a food hamper for a family and new toys for the children who would normally wake up on Christmas morning with little or nothing under the tree.

Your family, office or organization can make a family’s Christmas brighter by participating in The Salvation Army’s Family Sponsorship program. This program allows you to provide a family in need with a Christmas that they would otherwise not have.

$250 fully sponsors a family this Christmas but every donation is most appreciated.

Your commitment to sponsor a family will provide each child with new toys, groceries with food suitable for their family and culture to prepare a Christmas meal and something special for the parent (s).

Your donation does not go directly to a specific family.  Donations are combined in order to use the funds more effectively.  $250 represents the value of a typical Christmas assistance package for a family.

Frequently asked questions:

Q:  Can we purchase the items for the family?

A:  To ensure we provide all of our families receiving Christmas Assistance with the same level of support and to avoid any inequities between families we no longer are able to allow this practice.  If you would prefer to purchase items please consider making a toy donation to the CTV Toy Mountain Campaign.  Visit toronto.ctvnews.ca/toymountain for more information.

Q: Can we deliver a food hamper and toys to a family being sponsored?

A:  Receiving Christmas Assistance is generally a private matter and many families are generally not open to such a visit.

Q:  How do you distribute Christmas toys?

A:  We have noted that it is important to provide families that require assistance with a sense of dignity. Part of providing Christmas for your child is the experience of actually picking out the toy yourself instead of having a hamper handed to you.  With that in mind we have started to adopt a Christmas Store model of toy distribution.  We set up a store of the donated products and registered parents can actually choose items for their children.

Q:  How can we feel more directly involved?

A:  We would encourage you to visit one of our Community and Family Service Offices and see our work in action. You can take a tour or volunteer to help sorting toys and food and packing hampers.

Thank you for your generous support!
