On National Volunteer week, The Salvation Army extends a special thank you to our over 130,000 dedicated volunteers. Our volunteers provided over 1 million hours of service last year to help us feed, clothe, shelter and empower struggling Canadians. These are just a few of the thousands of volunteers who give their time, passion and skills from around the Ontario Great Lakes Division.

“My mother came to Canada from England when she was 19 years old. It was members of The Salvation Army that helped her, both on the ship, and train to Timmins. As kids, we went to Sunday school at The Salvation Army on Lundy’s Lane. The spirit of The Salvation Army is unmatched! I volunteered for the kettles at Christmas for the past two years and I can’t tell you how many people approached me with a donation and a story of having someone who had experienced the assistance of The Salvation Army. When my mother needed to go into care, The Salvation Army came to her rescue. She was welcomed at the Eventide nursing home where she currently resides. I started volunteering because I enjoy the atmosphere and the attitude of the staff and the residents. Everyone is so passionate in their commitment to care. I find myself looking forward to starting my shift. I get to spend time with my Mum and entertain the residents…many times, they entertain me!”

Valerie Dalton, Niagara Falls

“It’s become a home for me. After moving here almost five years ago I wanted to meet people in the community and volunteer. I saw an ad on Facebook during the very busy Christmas Hamper season and the rest is history. Now, I help run the foodbank and help in many areas of the church when they need me. I have gotten to know so many in our community. It’s a joy to walk down the street and be able to talk to people. I am actually named after The Salvation Army so I guess it’s a blessing that here I am, so involved. It’s been such joy each time I step inside our Church. I prayed daily for something to come up that I may get involved in and my prayers surely were answered!!!”

– Sally Ann, Wiarton

“We love to volunteer for The Salvation Army because we have seen the value of investing in young people. The return is huge, as we have witnessed in our lives and the lives of our children. We want to pass this on to the coming generation and to emulate Luke 12:48. We thank God for those who have invested in us and our children and in obedience to God, we strive to give back.”

– Sarah & Phil Rayment, Jackson’s Point Camp

“I used to be the Family Services worker for the Temiskaming Shores Salvation Army. I left there about nine years ago. I really missed the people and the excitement of preparing for and executing events like the Back Packs for Kids, Coats for Kids, No Bell Prize Christmas Hamper Campaign, luncheons and one on one conversation with the clients. I feel, this is where God wants me to be at this particular time in my life.”

– Nancy Gilmour, New Liskeard
