Fight Hunger This Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is quickly approaching and our food supplies are dangerously low. The holiday season is one of the most crucial times of the year for food banks as, after the summer months, many locations struggle with low inventory. “Food drives are very important during this time of year,” says Carolyn Kitney, Family Services Program Coordinator for The Salvation Army Whitby Community Church, “Our last major food drive was through the Easter season and everything we’ve collected from then and through the summer season has been used.”

Last week, The Salvation Army Whitby Community Church and the Real Canadian Superstore in Whitby invited community members to join the fight against hunger. A food drive was held at the Superstore where shoppers were encouraged to purchase non-perishable items to donate during their trip at the grocery store. For those who participated, a free pasta lunch was served as an expression of gratitude.

With the help of our wonderful sponsors, the Durham Regional Police, Whitby Fire, Whitby Real Canadian Superstore, Ontario Regiment Oshawa, KX96 New Country FM and CKDO 1580 AM, over 1,100 lbs of food were collected!

Please help stock our shelves this holiday season and consider donating to your local Salvation Army food bank. Some of our most needed items include pasta and pasta sauces, canned goods such as beans, soups and stews, dairy products, whole grain cereals and infant foods.
