The Salvation Army in Owen Sound Celebrates Donut Day

During World War 1 (1914-1918) Salvation Army volunteers provided free home-made donuts and coffee to troops near the front lines in canteens set up in abandoned buildings. One hundred years later, The Salvation Army continues to go to where the needs are the greatest, providing practical assistance and giving hope.

On Friday June 3, 2016 The Salvation Army in Owen Sound and Saugeen Shores celebrated “Donut Day” for the first time by giving away 1,000 packages containing two old fashioned sugar Timbits.  “Donut Day” confirms The Salvation Army’s 132 year commitment to caring service in the Grey-Bruce area, and was a way of thanking the public for their support.

Packed by an enthusiastic group of 23 volunteers, the 2,000 Timbits were distributed by Salvation Army volunteers at Zehrs and various downtown businesses. Donut Day was also celebrated with customers and donors at The Salvation Army Thrift Stores in Owen Sound and Port Elgin.

Donut Day 2016 was a huge success and generated very positive feedback from the public. Plans are underway to expand Donut Day for 2017.
