The Salvation Army Responds to Elliot Lake Roof Collapse

On Saturday, June 23 a 40-by-80-foot section of the roof of the Algo Centre in Elliot Lake collapsed onto the second floor and part of that crashed down onto the first floor.  Ever since the collapse, emergency crews have been working to rescue any possible survivors who may be trapped.

The Salvation Army in Elliot Lake has been in communication with local officials and have remained on stand-by.  On Monday the Army’s Drop-in Centre served 74 meals and provided emotional & spiritual support to many who have been affected by this emergency.

“We have our Drop-in Centre open and people are coming and going for refreshments”, says Captain Pamela Stanger.

The Community Response Unit from Sudbury was dispatched to assist in the response and since Tuesday has been on the street with water and sandwiches for those participating in a 24 hour vigil.  In addition, Emergency Disaster Services team members from Sudbury and Sault Ste Marie have deployed to assist the local team.

“The Salvation Army is committed to assisting the people of Elliot Lake during these very tragic and difficult circumstances”, says Perron Goodyear, Divisional Director of Emergency & Disaster Services.  “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families affected as well as the rescue workers”.

With the vigil now over as the search is complete, The Salvation Army will continue to provide support to the people of Elliot Lake at the HOPE Café.
