The Salvation Army Assists With Northern Ontario Evacuations

With extreme weather causing emergency evacuations in Northern Ontario, The Salvation Army is monitoring the situation and has offered to help in any way possible.

Divisional Director or Emergency & Disaster Services, Perron Goodyear, recently returned from a trip to Kirkland Lake and Timmins where he met with emergency officials in both communities to offer the assistance of the Army should large-scale evacuations be needed. Thankfully the situation has improved in recent days but both communities were extremely grateful for the offer of support.

In addition, in Thunder Bay, rain has caused severe flooding and has meant the sewage treatment plant has not been able to keep up with the water in the system. The local Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services team is preparing food and hydration to be served at the evacuation centre during the next few days for those displaced by the emergency. As of this morning, the team is now beginning preparations to provide mobile feeding in the east end to residents that are staying home but not able to prepare food.

The local state of emergency will be in effect until the sewage treatment plant is up and running to code.

“The Salvation Army is committed to assisting in any way we can during these very difficult days”, says Goodyear.
