Background
The National Advisory Board (NAB) of the Salvation Army Canada and Bermuda territory was formed in 2009 with Commissioner Bill Francis as Territorial Commander and Andy Lennox as Board Chair and continues to operate as per the terms outlined in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), revised March 19, 2018. The NAB has no legal or governance responsibility, the function is strictly advisory. Andy Lennox remained Chair for ten years until September 2019, at which time Janice Barton moved up to Chair from her Vice Chair position. She was hired by TSA Chief HR officer in August 2020 resulting in the Vice Chair, Paul Koreen being appointed the Chair.
The Chair, through the NAB, is responsible for recruiting candidates with diverse backgrounds and national perspective and consults directly with the National Advisory Board Executive Committee (NABEC) to nominate and appoint members. The NABEC is responsible to develop the work plan and agendas of the Board in consultation with the NAB and TSA Territorial Management Board. Since inception, the NAB work plan has provided advice and assistance on matters that have had significant impact on The Salvation Army’s territory wide operations.
The NAB meets three times a year – January and May meetings usually held in Toronto with the September dates being at another location in the Territory. For these away meetings, tours of the local Ministry Units are scheduled so that the Board sees firsthand the work that is being done. A State of the Division report is also shared by the D.C. and the divisional team.
Task Teams/Advisory Committees
Advisory committees and task teams have been formed during the past 10 years as needed to enhance the work of the NAB and have served and continue to serve to bring further value to TSA by attracting volunteers with expert knowledge who act as trusted advisors and coaches to various TSA functions and respective management and are a source for future candidates for the NAB. It has been a natural progression as the relationship between the NAB and TSA has developed based on transparency, mutual respect of expertise, and quality impact of the work delivered to date through the NAB.
