In celebration of <strong>Senior\u2019s Month<\/strong>, we are honoured to share the remarkable story of <strong>Elzelina Bezemer<\/strong>, whose life blossomed like the tulips she holds dear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born in the Netherlands in the city of Breda, Elzelina\u2019s childhood was shaped by the trials of <strong>World War II<\/strong>. Her home, partially destroyed by bombing, became a refuge when Canadian soldiers moved in during the liberation. \u201cThey were very nice,\u201d she remembers fondly\u2014her voice soft, but her spirit strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That bond between <strong>Canada and the Netherlands<\/strong> continues to this day, symbolized by the annual gift of tulip bulbs from the Dutch people to Canada. It\u2019s a floral tribute to freedom, friendship, and gratitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inspired by Elzelina\u2019s memories, our residents created a meaningful <strong>tulip-themed art display<\/strong> in the lobby this May, using templates from Veterans Affairs Canada. At its heart stands <strong>Elzelina\u2019s \u201ctulip dress\u201d<\/strong>, a vibrant expression of her heritage and enduring strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This Senior\u2019s Month, we honour Elzelina\u2014and all the remarkable residents at Meighen\u2014for the stories they carry and the wisdom they continue to share.
