It\u2019s believed to be the first not-for-profit centre in the country to offer such a service.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Technologically, we are way behind all other sectors,&#8221; said Monica Klein-Nouri, executive director of the Meighen Health Centre, which is run by the Canadian Salvation Army. &#8220;I said, &#8216;This is something that I want to be the first to do.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In March, the Isabel and Arthur Meighen Manor began offering access to Engage Plus, a Canadian-developed software program with an app that connects family members with residents&#8217; medical files.<\/p>\n<p>To read the full article and watch the video \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/health\/vitals-medication-nurses-notes-available-24-7-through-canadian-made-app-for-long-term-care-homes-1.6989569\">Visit the CTV News link here<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/content\/dam\/ctvnews\/en\/images\/2024\/8\/5\/long-term-care-home-medical-information-1-6989587-1722880358645.jpeg\" alt=\"Engage Plus, a Canadian-developed software program, can provide families access to their relatives' up-to-date medical file.\" \/>[\/vc_message][vc_message]<b>Regulation Changes: Information for Residents, Families, and Caregivers\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ontario made changes to some of the rules that long-term care homes must follow.\u00a0 The changes relate to:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Select staffing qualifications\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pandemic provisions\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Air conditioning\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Replacement homes\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Starting May 1st, 2024\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Staffing Qualifications and Flexibility\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Homes will continue to have flexibility to hire a person to provide personal support services if\u00a0 they have the skills, training and knowledge to perform the tasks of a personal support\u00a0 worker, even if they don\u2019t meet the qualification requirements.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> All regulated health professionals acting within their scope of practice will be able to perform\u00a0 skin assessments to check for changes in pressure, colour, moisture, etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><i>Air Conditioning\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> More resident choice for air conditioning preferences by specifying when homes would\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not have to install a portable or window unit, if requested by residents.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When room temperatures are identified to be over 26 degrees Celsius or higher without air\u00a0 conditioning, for the remainder of the day and the following day, homes must implement a\u00a0 heat related illness and management plan for resident comfort and safety.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Starting July 1st, 2024\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Staffing Qualifications\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Nursing student externs will be permitted to work in long-term care homes to help with\u00a0 tasks that are restricted to certain roles, such as skin assessments and the administration\u00a0 of drugs. They will need to be supervised by a registered nursing staff to help\u00a0 with clinical activities.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Registered practical nurses will be allowed to conduct assessments to help\u00a0 determine eligibility for long-term care and when moving residents to their preferred home.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><i>Pandemic Provisions\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Removing pandemic rules that provided exceptions to timelines for staff orientation and 24- <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hour nursing requirements.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Removing certain pandemic-specific admission, placement, and discharge procedures. \u2022 Ensuring access to essential visitors is maintained during emergency situations.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><i>Replacement Related and Reopened Homes\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When residents are being transferred from their existing home to a replacement, related or\u00a0 reopened home, they are able to move in faster with streamlined admission\u00a0 requirements. This is currently limited to homes operated by the same licensee. The\u00a0 change will extend this to homes operated by related licensees, subject to applicable\u00a0 requirements.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_message][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<table role=\"presentation\" border=\"0\" width=\"100%\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"m_-3646460147706777380mceBlockContainer\" align=\"center\" valign=\"top\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"m_-3646460147706777380mceLogo CToWUd\" src=\"https:\/\/ci3.googleusercontent.com\/meips\/ADKq_NapRFViplcHUtKdTzyuYVltuKwb-0pW8VoMTp_hDkgWjRkmi1iR7ydmz8L7l0JvDbWJz7UWM4FNYMQ_567tCk9Ncwx0i7b7FvxG9A_4Jun66eNS5jqHu4LlGxw6tuALrbg9qkm3OlS-8H91GsJttwpd8FGO6D9fBXc=s0-d-e1-ft#https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/204a027af0bc3ec0cf544ed67\/images\/69d13ce1-9471-f0fa-fa31-7019e65cac70.png\" alt=\"Logo\" width=\"362\" height=\"auto\" data-bit=\"iit\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"m_-3646460147706777380mceBlockContainer\" valign=\"top\">\n<table role=\"presentation\" border=\"0\" width=\"100%\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"m_-3646460147706777380mceBlockContainer\" valign=\"top\">\n<div id=\"m_-3646460147706777380dataBlockId-5\" class=\"m_-3646460147706777380mceText\">\n<p><strong>Dear Residents, Family Members and Friends,<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"m_-3646460147706777380mceBlockContainer\" valign=\"top\">\n<div id=\"m_-3646460147706777380dataBlockId-7\" class=\"m_-3646460147706777380mceText\">\n<p><strong>On March 4, 2024, the MLTC released a memo announcing that effective immediately it will be ending the enhanced masking measures.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Ministry shared that this decision was part of the advice of the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health due to recent trends of decreases in community-level transmission of COVID-19, flu, and RSV, as well as decreases in outbreaks in LTC homes, and increased vaccination rates.<\/p>\n<p>As required in the Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) Standard and the updated MLTC COVID-19 guidance document, <strong>masking in non-outbreak situations in LTC homes continues to be:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Required for staff, based on a point-of-care risk assessment before every resident interaction, and based on the return-to-work protocols.<\/li>\n<li>Staff may consider wearing a mask during prolonged direct resident care defined as one-on-one within two meters of an individual for fifteen minutes or longer.<\/li>\n<li>Recommended for visitors and caregivers, but not required.<\/li>\n<li>Homes are encouraged to implement \u201cmask friendly\u201d policies, including accommodating:\n<ul>\n<li>staff who prefer to continue to wear a mask beyond minimum requirements.<\/li>\n<li>residents, or substitute decision-makers, who request that a staff member wear a mask when providing care, in alignment with <a href=\"https:\/\/salvationarmy.us10.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=204a027af0bc3ec0cf544ed67&amp;id=3872fb933c&amp;e=6cbb28481e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/salvationarmy.us10.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3D204a027af0bc3ec0cf544ed67%26id%3D3872fb933c%26e%3D6cbb28481e&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1709834248604000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2CQ6o91fwdfEsIK328cJaT\">the residents\u2019 Bill of Rights,<\/a> including the right to participate fully in making any decisions concerning any aspect of their care<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We will continue to follow all IPAC-related requirements in the regulation and <a href=\"https:\/\/salvationarmy.us10.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=204a027af0bc3ec0cf544ed67&amp;id=6cbb7ba61e&amp;e=6cbb28481e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/salvationarmy.us10.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3D204a027af0bc3ec0cf544ed67%26id%3D6cbb7ba61e%26e%3D6cbb28481e&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1709834248604000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3jYgMoiWV47izxT-eS9_8n\">IPAC Standard<\/a> and we continue to strengthen foundational practices, employing multiple layers of protection, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>comprehensive IPAC program,<\/li>\n<li>encouraging vaccination,<\/li>\n<li>ready access to medication,<\/li>\n<li>self-monitoring for symptoms,<\/li>\n<li>staying home when sick and<\/li>\n<li>staff training on point-of-care risk assessment before each resident encounter<\/li>\n<li>wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE),<\/li>\n<li>ensure adequate PPE supplies and<\/li>\n<li>conducting regular IPAC audits<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Our Home is re-implementing the \u201cmask friendly\u201d policy to accommodate staff\/visitors\/others who prefer to continue wearing a mask beyond minimum requirements. She became a resident at The Salvation Army Meighen Manor long-term care home in Toronto in 2021 and attended her first art class.<\/p>\n<p>Her love of painting began when a local artist came to teach art at Meighen Manor to provide an activity for residents facing isolation during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Art teacher Roberta Pellegrina began working at Meighen Manor as a resident assistant in 2021 through a government program for those who found themselves unemployed during the pandemic. Roberta was offered a position at Meighen Manor and the program has now expanded to retirement residents as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRoberta had an amazing approach with the residents. She was very encouraging, and the residents would paint whatever they liked,\u201d said Monica Klein-Nouri, Executive Director at Meighen Manor. \u201cThey really enjoyed the activity and we now have paintings all over the home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ginger has completed over 50 paintings. Her goal is to donate paintings to the units at Meighen Manor so other residents can enjoy the paintings and many have them hanging in their rooms. Residents are encouraged to choose the paintings they love the best for their room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to donate my paintings to every resident in the Manor. I gave away paintings to everyone on my floor and to any other people that wanted a painting. Now I want to see my paintings on every floor. Some residents have nothing on the walls, or they don\u2019t have anyone to visit them, so the paintings give them something to look at,\u201d said Ginger.<\/p>\n<p>Ginger loves to paint nature, animals, landscapes and structures such as the Eiffel Tower.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI enjoy it because it makes the time pass by and it keeps me busy.\u00a0I paint about 5 hours per day. I have a routine to paint every day after breakfast and after lunch,\u201d said Ginger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has very beautiful paintings! She is such a selfless person,\u201d said Monica. It\u2019s very heartwarming and she wants to keep painting, sharing her art and donating to those who don\u2019t have one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the encouragement of the Recreation Team\u2019s Jose Rodriguez and supervisor Adrienne Osbourne, Ginger is meeting her goal and exceeding her expectations.\u00a0 An art exhibition of Ginger\u2019s work was recently held in the Meighen Manor community room. Residents, staff and family members attended the show. \u00a0Donations were accepted and proceeds went to the home\u2019s recreation department.<\/p>\n<p>A few months ago, an art show of all the residents\u2019 work was held and included a fundraising auction.
