As the second wave of the pandemic continues, The Salvation Army has been forced to cancel many events that raise vital funds for our programs and services. Yet, one iconic Christmas event is still able to go ahead – the virtual Santa Shuffle.

“It’s one of the biggest fundraisers for The Salvation Army in the Maritimes,” says Major Elaine Locke, divisional special events coordinator. “This event raises more than $60,000 and every dime goes back into the community to fund our programs and services.”

Now in its 30th year, the Santa Shuffle 5K Fun-Run and 1K Elf Walk brings together passionate individuals from across the Maritimes to support vulnerable Canadians and the work of The Salvation Army.

“So many people look forward to this event as their way to kick-off the Christmas season. Every year we hear more families say it’s the best way to feel the Christmas spirit and give back to the community.”

This year, the Santa Shuffle is going virtual. The Salvation Army is encouraging everyone to still take part in the run at their own convenience from December 5 – 12, 2020, from the safety of their own community with members of their household bubble.

“We can still come together, spread Christmas cheer and help The Salvation Army,” explains Elaine. “It’s actually easier than ever to take part in the event with your family now that it’s virtual.”

Although the event is virtual, participants will still receive a race-kit that is included in their registration fee that will be available through contactless pick-up at Running Room locations.

“Each race kit will include a unique participant medal and a bib as it does every year. We worked with our event partner, the Running Room, to ensure all precautions are in place for pick-up.

With less than two weeks until the event, Elaine knows that participants will still take part. She is encouraging everyone to share their photos on social media, using the hashtag #SantaShuffle.

“We can’t wait to see pictures on social media with everyone’s smiling faces holding up their medals.”

Participants can register online from now until December 3, 2020.

If you have already registered, you can find information on race kit pick-up here.
