HALIFAX, NS June 9, 2020 – This Wednesday, The Salvation Army Fairview Citadel will distribute 50,000 lbs of potatoes to those experiencing food insecurity, thanks to a generous donation from McCain Foods Canada.

“Re-opening has begun in our province, but that doesn’t mean the need has ended. Many are still without a job and facing the realities of food insecurity,” says Captain Brent Haas, Leader of The Salvation Army Fairview Citadel.

Distribution of the 50,000 lbs of potatoes will take place at Salvation Army Fairview Citadel, located at 50 Gresner St., Halifax, on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 10, from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM. Those in need are welcome to walk up or drive thru to receive a bag of potatoes for their family.

The Salvation Army will also be delivering potatoes to partner organizations, thanks to Penske Truck Rental, who donated a truck to help with distribution, with the help of volunteers, many from the Lion’s Club.

“We are so thankful for community partners, such as McCain Foods and Penske Truck Rental,” says Captain Haas. “Their support enables us to be there for vulnerable people in Halifax when they need us the most.”

McCain Foods has donated 250,000 lbs of potatoes to The Salvation Army Maritime Division since the pandemic began in March 2020.

The Salvation Army continues to serve those in need throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. To learn more about our response, please visit https://salvationarmy.ca/maritime
