Across the maritimes, officers and salvationist couples are working side-by-side to bring hope, transform communities and lead through ministry. This valentine’s day, we are highlighting three couples from our maritime divisional headquarters that are making an impact together.

    Anything but Loveless

As Majors Cavell and Wayne Loveless continue in their final appointment before retirement, they reflect on their more than 41 years of marriage and a career spent in The Salvation Army.

The couple met in 1976 at a lunch with mutual friends. Cavell was in her second year of training college, and Wayne was about to begin his first. They began dating once they were at the college together in the fall, and have been together ever since.

“Our first appointment after we were married in December of 1978, was in Greenspond, Newfoundland. It was the dead of winter and we were sent to reopen the corps after it had been closed for 10 years,” says Wayne. “It was quite the adventure.”

While they serve as Area Commanders for The Salvation Army’s Maritime Division today, they find their experience from their first appointment more than 40 years ago is still relevant.

“We learned that making an impact in a community is about building relationships,” says Wayne. “While our work is different today, and we’ve had to find more creative ways to build relationships over the years, it all comes back to the relationships themselves whether it’s with a person in need or a fellow officer.”

Throughout the years, they have been stationed across both Canada and Bermuda, in roles that range from Corps to Social Services ministry to Divisional leadership. But the time they spent working closely together has allowed them to become a dynamic duo.

“It has always been a partnership between us. We work as a team and have skill-sets that complement each other,” he continues. “I am about getting to know people one-on-one, while Cavell is creative in her preaching and writing.”

When it comes to their name, they both can sense a little irony. But throughout their years as officers, they have been able to show love and compassion in every community they have lived in.

“We do get teased about our name,” says Cavell. “But I’m a Loveless by marriage, we’re not loveless people, and we don’t have a loveless marriage!”
