For many of us, Fridays are our favourite day of the week. On Friday, June 7th, we will not only celebrate Friday, but also, National Doughnut Day. Each year on the first Friday of June, The Salvation Army celebrates this sweet event, which is filled with tradition and history.

Created in 1938 during World War I, Salvation Army “Doughnut Lassies,” made fresh, complimentary doughnuts for the soldiers serving in France; two Lassies named Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance, cleverly fried the doughnuts made from the rationed ingredients available. The fresh smell and taste of baked goods cheered up and fed the soldiers who were risking their lives in the trenches. Word spread quickly among the soldiers that “If you’re hungry and broke, you can get something to eat at The Salvation Army.”

This tradition is carried on today as Doughnut Day raises awareness and funds to support The Salvation Army’s vital programs and services that give hope to many. The motivation behind the original “doughnut day” is our continued mission to serve others and give hope; sometimes it’s the little things that matter most.

How can you Celebrate Doughnut Day?

    • Celebrate the spirit of charity that gave rise to this tradition by volunteering or donating to The Salvation Army in your community
    • Visit your local doughnut store to treat yourself, a friend, or a stranger
    • Make doughnuts at home and share them with family, friends, and community members
