“It’s nice when you can help someone who‘s in need,” says long-time volunteer, Lu.

Years ago, Lu came to The Salvation Army for assistance during Christmas. She knew then and there that she would volunteer with the organization as a way of giving back to the community. “Knowing my kids would wake up with something under the tree” was an enormous help during a difficult time.

The Christmas assistance program helps over 5,000 families in the Maritimes, providing essentials for a Christmas dinner and toys for children. “That’s why I wanted to volunteer, because they’d given so much to me over the years,” says Lu.

Lu is now a regular volunteer with The Salvation Army, doing everything from toy-packing, administrative work, and helping with the food bank.

Special Programs Coordinator, James Woods, stresses the importance of volunteers for The Salvation Army, “Christmas isn’t the only time we need volunteers. We have many programs that are ongoing, such as the food banks, and other programs that are seasonal, such as back to school and Christmas distribution.”

Throughout the Maritimes, hundreds of community-minded people stood by kettles, packed toys, cooked meals, and helped with distributing Christmas hampers. People from all walks of life, from corporate teams to teenagers, dedicated themselves to making a difference in the community. It is those thousands of volunteers hours that allow The Salvation Army to give hope to those in need.

The work of The Salvation Army would not be possible without the dedication and compassion from our volunteers. We thank you whole-heartedly for your hard work during the Christmas season and throughout the year.

As the holiday season winds down, there is still a need for volunteers to assist with daily and seasonal events. Corporate volunteers, community members, and even kids are welcome to lend a helping hand. “It’s rewarding to see kids involved in volunteering,” says Woods.
