The Salvation Army in Sydney, NS was recently presented with a $5,000 cheque by the Kiwanis Club of Cape Breton Golden K in support of the ABC program. The ABC program provides non-perishable snacks to Cape Breton schools, allowing teachers to offer students a bit of nourishment during the school day.

Children who are hungry are often restless and distracted during class. Studies show that a lack of nutrition can impact all aspects of learning, including memory, problem-solving, creativity and concentration.  "Having a light snack helps students stay focused and feeling happy," say Corps Officer Corey Vincent.

This is the second year that Golden K has supported the ABC program. With their contribution The Salvation Army was able to provide snacks to children in 21 schools, from primary to grade nine, across Cape Breton Island.

Community Ministries Coordinator, Nicole MacLean, says, “We were able to fill bins with snacks like raisins, granola bars, juice and, cheese and crackers. These snacks will feed over 5,000 kids in the community.”

Having the highest rate of poverty in Atlantic Canada, programs like ABC are vital to communities throughout Cape Breton. This program largely serves children from low-income families, but is equally available to all children in the schools.

Thank you to the Kiwanis Club of Cape Breton Golden K for your generous contribution and for investing in tomorrow’s leaders.
