The renovations added over 200 square metres of space to the facility, expanding the facilities for soup kitchen, which dishes up 60 hot meals per day, five days per week. It also brought The Salvation Army’s Community & Family Services and food bank under the same roof, providing a number of services for Islanders in need at one location.

“We are excited to see this work completed, and to show what we can now offer the residents of Prince County,” says Major Willis Drover, Corps Officer in Summerside. “Increasing the size of our soup kitchen facilities will help us continue to meet the needs of our community, while bringing all of our services under one roof allows greater accessibility to all the services we offer.”

In addition to the daily soup kitchen, The Salvation Army provides support to the residents of Prince County in a number of ways, including sending kids to summer camp, food bank services, and Christmas hampers.

“We are proud to be here today to unveil this renovated facility and see the soup kitchen in action,” says Major Alison Cowling, Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army in the Maritimes. “Today is only possible thanks to the continued support of the community. Without their generosity and support, we would not be able to bring dignity and hope to those in need, by providing food, clothing and shelter.”

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was led by Commissioner Brian Peddle, The Salvation Army’s top soldier in Canada, officially dedicating the facility. The ceremony also included remarks from local politicians and Salvation Army officials.

“This soup kitchen brings hope to so many people in the community,” says Commissioner Peddle. “I want to personally thank the volunteers for their integral role for making a soup kitchen like this happen on a daily basis.”

The Salvation Army is located at 374 Pope Road in Summerside. Anyone in need of support can visit the facility, or call (902) 432-4780.
