Four months ago, The Salvation Army Richmond Community Church<\/a> opened its doors to the Recovery Church, a transformative Sunday evening service designed to offer human connection, support, and God\u2019s love to those navigating the challenges of addiction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every week, nearly 30 guests fill the dining hall eager to enjoy a hot meal, meaningful conversations with peers, and the spiritual care offered through the Church. Recovery Church provides a welcoming space where individuals can share both victories and struggles, knowing they are surrounded by a community committed to walking with them toward sobriety. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Auxiliary Captains\u00a0Steve and Florence Yau, Corps Officers at The Salvation Army Richmond Community Church, recognized\u00a0that Richmond\u00a0needed\u00a0a program that\u00a0went deeper than meal service alone. For the past\u00a0three\u00a0years, the Mobile Feeding\u00a0Program\u00a0has\u00a0continued\u00a0to\u00a0provide\u00a0hot meals\u00a0five\u00a0times a week, giving volunteers and staff the opportunity to build trust with those who visit the food truck regularly. These relationships laid the foundation for what would eventually become\u00a0the Recovery\u00a0Church.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019ll be tragic if we just feed for the rest of our lives,\u201d shares\u00a0Aux.\u00a0Captain\u00a0Steve\u00a0Yau. \u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0a second step\u00a0from\u00a0the feeding\u00a0now to\u00a0the recovery.\u00a0We\u2019re\u00a0praying and believing that a lot of them will recover, be delivered from their addiction,\u00a0come clean and eventually help others.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

For some, like Dan, Recovery Church has become a lifeline. A longtime supporter of The Salvation Army, he never expected to be in need of our services. \u201cI didn\u2019t know 40 years later I would be here for help,\u201d he shares. For Dan, the program has strengthened him both physically and spiritually. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt helped me keep physically strong, to keep my body working like it should by having proper, balanced meals at regular times. I\u2019m very grateful for that, because sound body, sound mind are very important. And having faith is the best thing.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

For others, the greatest impact comes through community. Since the launch of Recovery Church, Chris and Dwayne have rarely missed a Sunday. For Chris, the gathering provides a grounding sense of connection, \u201cComing here, it\u2019s a strong sense of community, and helps me get out of my head, and be around people\u201d. Dwayne shares that the program has given him a network he can trust, \u201cNow I\u2019ve got people I can lean on\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just as Recovery Church first opened its doors to offer connection, support, and God\u2019s love, its atmosphere continues to nurture that same spiritual care, encouraging guests to grow in faith, build community, and pursue freedom from addiction. Through prayer, worship, and messages of God\u2019s love, guests are reminded that they are not alone and that hope is always within reach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
