Today, there are more warm and dry people in Maple Ridge thanks to the kindness of a Grade 2 student from Kanaka Creek elementary.<\/p>\n
Ryder Moore is a 7 year old boy who, last year, developed the idea to raise funds for those living on the streets in his community. Upon taking a drive through the downtown east side with his mom the previous year, Ryder became interested in the factors that lead people to live on the streets. And after a very mature conversation with his parents, Ryder was insistent on finding ways to help.<\/p>\n
Struck by the fact that some people didn\u2019t have shoes on while it was raining, Ryder, with help from his parents Sarah and Mike Moore, started what is now known as the annual Ryders Rainboots campaign.<\/p>\n
This year, Ryder raised $3,021 to purchase rain boots and warm articles of clothing for people at The Salvation Army Ridge Meadows Ministries. He bought 100 pairs of rain boots, 140 pairs of gloves, 100 pairs of socks, 100 toques, 120 pairs of underwear, 60 ponchos for men and women and 40 Muddy Buddy\u2019s for children.<\/p>\n
To spread some additional holiday cheer, Ryder made handwritten cards and baked cookies for all who lined up for the winter necessities.<\/p>\n
Salvation Army client Dick Tremblay, who happily received his boots in time for extreme weather conditions, was so touched by Ryder\u2019s efforts that he wrote him a message back:<\/p>\n
\u201cRyder. These boots are just what this old fart needed. Nice warm dry feet. Son, love ya man.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ryder demonstrates to us all what is important this time of year and reminds us that a little can go a long way. We are touched by the philanthropic efforts demonstrated by youth in our community and are proud to call Ryder Moore our hero of the week.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
