The Simon Fraser University Men’s basketball team recently spent their Sunday evening giving back, as they came to The Salvation Army Vancouver Harbour Light in The Downtown Eastside community to serve on the foodline.

“I am so proud of my team today because I believe that being a student athlete is more than just playing games and going to school,” said head coach James Blake who also assisted at The Salvation Army Vancouver Harbour Light. “The true college experience involves volunteering in your community to make a better all-around person and university.” The team enjoyed the experience as they contributed to the food preparation, serving of the meal and spent time with many of the clients throughout the evening.

“Tonight was a great experience for us as a team,” said Captain, Sango Niang. “It is a good feeling to help those less fortunate and I am glad we took the time to get involved in our community.”

It is not the first time that the team has visited The Salvation Army Vancouver Harbour Light, and will not be the last, as Coach Blake hopes to continue the tradition for years to come.

“The team served Sunday dinner to those that are currently a little less fortunate, in the heart of the Downtown Eastside and Vancouver’s most troubled neighborhood,” finished Blake. “They represented Simon Fraser University and the athletic department very well tonight, and I believe they gave back to the community and had a great experience at the same time.”
