Congratulations to Louis, a current client at our Salvation Army Vancouver Harbour Light, for being presented with VPD’s highest award for civilian bravery, a Certificate of Merit.

These awards are given to citizens who have demonstrated outstanding conduct, “on their own initaitive and in the face of actual or anticipated danger, assisted the police in preventing a crime, apprehending or attempt in to apprehend an offender, or made a life saving attempt.”

This past January, Louis and his friend were sitting near the promenade dock at Crab Beach Park when he noticed a visibly upset elderly man walk to the edge of the dock, climb over the railing and jump into the water. Louis’ friend ran to the dock’s edge and, seeing the man face down in the water, jumped in to rescue him. Louis saw his friend struggling to stay afloat in the frigid water with the elderly man and dove in immediately to assist. Together, they brought the elderly man back to shore, saving his life.

Thank you to, Louis, for the bravery and heroism you displayed in coming to the rescue of your friend and fellow man without second thought – a true community inspiration.
