With big smiles and the comforting aroma of home-made lasagna filling the multi-purpose room at the Vancouver Community & Family Services, Major Russ Holland presented the certificates to the 12 graduates who have successfully completed the  first cycle of ‘Sally Ann’s Healthy Eating Kitchen’.  The participants consisted of women, ranging in age from 20 to early 60’s, inclusive of 4 single moms with school aged or older children.  It was a diverse group of women who participated, not only in demographics but through their various paths of knowledge, skills and experiences in the kitchen.

The weekly cooking sessions were quick in drawing them together through a series of cooking activities in small groups along with handouts and discussion on topics of nutrition, food safety, budgeting and meal planning.  Many comments have been made regarding the hope for a future Healthy Eating Food Swap. In addition to positive participation within the group, the project also enjoyed generous community support from agencies in the community, such as Canadian Tire’s donation of quality cook ware.

Five more cycles are planned to be held in 2014 on January 16, March 6, April 24, June 5 and July 17!

Sounds like the Sally Ann kitchen has something good cookin’!
