Temporary Physical Distancing Shelter Opens
The COVID-19 pandemic has changed what the world looks like for everyone; instead of meeting friends and family, dining at restaurants, attending sports games and concerts, we have been advised to stay home for the safety of ourselves and others.
But what about the people who have no place to call home?
The Salvation Army Ridge Meadows Ministries has stepped up to help those in this situation.
Last month we partnered with BC Housing and Fraser Health to create a Temporary Physical Distancing Shelter in Maple Ridge. This provides the opportunity to reassign clients from the existing building enabling safe, supportive space with access to hygiene facilities.
The total number of clients remains the same, now just split between two locations. Physically distancing 25 individuals from the original shelter that holds 60 people will reduce crowding, all in an effort of safety, while also mitigating the demand on our health care system. Shelter staff remain onsite 24/7 to provide supervision, meals and cleaning services, as well as support services.
“The harsh reality is that not everyone has a home or even a safe place to call their own. Many experiencing homelessness are living in situations where COVID-19 can spread rapidly.”
– Ridge Meadows Ministries Executive Director, Mark Stewart
BC Housing reports that the COVID-19 virus can spread more quickly in the homeless population due to their living situations, as well as in seniors and those with pre-existing health conditions.
The well-being and safety of our clients remain our number one concern, all necessary precautions are being taken including extra sanitizing, extra hygiene facilities for clients, plexiglass barriers and personal protective equipment for staff. If any client or staff experience symptoms or tests positive for COVID-19, protocol will be followed, they will be transferred to another location and Fraser Health will be contacted for further investigation and screening.
“I appreciate the opportunity Ridge Meadows Ministries has received, we thank everyone for their support and for trusting us to do the work we do.” – Mark Stewart
Since opening, in addition to providing a safe space for physical distancing, the temporary shelter also provides new opportunities; the quiet, calm, and relaxed setting has allowed clients to work on their personal plans. Already, three clients have been able to transition back into the community.
