Toronto, December 9, 2013 – Canada’s largest non-governmental direct social service provider is commending the Federal Government on the creation and launch of a dedicated enforcement team based in Montreal to combat human trafficking (click here for report). The Salvation Army has participated in consultations around the development of the national plan and sees the creation of this team as a significant step towards continuing action as outlined in the plan.

Although anyone can become a victim of human trafficking, persons who suffer from social, economic, gender and legal inequality are at an increased risk of becoming victims of this crime. The victims are deprived of their normal lives and compelled to provide their labour or sexual services, through a variety of coercive practices, all for the direct profit of the traffickers.

“The Salvation Army is pleased that the federal government has introduced new measures to address the growing issue of human trafficking,” said Commissioner Brian Peddle, Territorial Commander for The Salvation Army in Canada and Bermuda. “We remain committed to restoring hope and dignity as we serve those marginalized by this criminal activity.”

The Salvation Army has been providing assistance to victims of trafficking both in Canada and around the world for more than 100 years and was one of the first organizations in Canada to open a shelter dedicated to providing services to victims of human trafficking.

The Salvation Army is looking forward to the continued opportunity to partner with the government in ensuring the initiative announced today is successful in addressing human trafficking and therefore preventing future cases of this terrible crime.
