Salvation Army Haiti Earthquake Relief: Update 6

The Salvation Army in Haiti has now distributed more than one million meals, hundreds of tents, baby items and medical supplies in its response to the earthquake.

Food distribution has begun in Petit Goave (68 km from Port-au-Prince) with the provision of 500 food boxes. Reaching the town was a challenge due to rock and debris in the roadway. Packages will provide a family of five with a weeks worth of nutrition. Distribution continues at the Army’s compound in Port-au-Prince and remains orderly with the assistance of the U.S. 82nd Airborne Division.

Medical treatment continues with a 14-person medical team, including eight doctors, who are giving aid to more than 200 people each day. Complex medical procedures are taking place with very limited medical resources.

The Salvation Army has reopened school classes for children ages 3 to 6 in a temporary site at the compound

The main focus for Salvation Army relief teams is on the 20,000 people, which has become a city of tents, living near the compound in Port-au-Prince.

To date, The Salvation Army in Canada has raised $4.4 million to support its ongoing efforts to serve the victims of Haiti. More than $200,000 has been raised through the Text-to-Donate program.

At least 90% of each donation will be sent directly to support the relief effort in Haiti.

Donors should specify their gift to the Haiti Earthquake Disaster Relief Fund.
